WINTER FASHION GUIDE
STEP OUT IN STYLE AND STAY WARM!
JANUARY 2010 Newsletter
BALD IS BEAUTIFUL, BUT IS IT WARM?
Have you ever wondered about the insulation value of hair in the colder
temperatures? Now that an Arctic chill has blanketed much of the country, I am
curious to find out why bald women feel the cold more than our follically endowed
sisters. I recently discovered a study conducted by students at Cornell University that
explored the extent to which hair insulates the head and whether bald people are at
an extreme disadvantage in winter weather. The students conducted an experiment to
determine whether wearing a hat can fully compensate for the lack of hair. In their
report "Bald is Beautiful, but is it warm?," the researchers concluded that the heads of
bald individuals who wear a hat are insulated against cold temperatures to the same
degree as those with a full head of hair, with skin temperatures only varying a small
degree. Without a head covering, the amount of hair makes a big difference. Small
amounts of hair seem to have very little effect on the overall temperature of the skin
after 12 minutes in the cold temps BUT the person with thick and lush locks enjoys a
much higher skin temperature and an insulated head! Conclusion? The hair on your
head can provide warmth and while those of us without hair do experience the cold to
a much greater degree, we can insulate our heads as well as anyone with hair by
simply wearing a head covering. As a person without hair, I didn't really need a team
of experts to explain to me why I've been so cold , but it is comforting to know that with
a simple scarf, such as a 'Headwarmer', to cover our heads, we bald beauties can be
warm AND fashionable.

Terese from Chicago says: "I have worn a Jersey Girl of one color or another since
Thanksgiving. For Christmas, I wore my black Pampered Head Warmer, and it kept
my bald noggin warm enough to keep my teeth from chattering. Not only do I wear
Jersey Chicks every day, I cover THEM with a warmer scarf when I go out in our
Chicago wind chills. No doubt about it, bald equals shivers when the temps drop! So I
long for summer again, when I can pull out the prints, silks and such, but until then, I
am grateful for the Girls from Jersey".
